Kid gets caught stealing PSP at QuakeCon 2007!
Here at QuakeCon 2007 a 17-year-old kid got caught stealing a PSP. He decided to steal the PSP from a guy not too far from him then went to the DC++ chat to try to sell it. Then the PSP’s owner finds the kid on DC++ selling his PSP right after it’s missing. And of course we all know where it goes from here…the PSP owner acts like he’s interested in buying the PSP, finds that it is indeed his PSP, and before long QuakeCon staff and the Dallas PD get him kicked out of the event. Rumor has it that he’s permabanned from the event and they may even be informing BlizzCon too.
This is a story from someone who knew the guy that had the PSP stolen:
“My girlfriend (Day_Dreamer) is actually to credit for this. This guy stole the PSP from a friend of ours and tried to sell it on DC++ chat. My gf private-messaged the guy and offered $190 to buy it. She then met up with him and tried to get the S/N off of the PSP, but the sticker that had the S/N was ripped off by the dude. When asked about it he gave a BS reason that it was a refurbished PSP and didn’t come with one. Later she and I did some research and figured out that you could also identify a PSP by the MAC address the PSP has. She then got a group of cops and Quakecon staff together along with our friend and confronted the dude once again. While asking the guy about the PSP he changed his story several times, ranging from “My brother got it from me” to “I got it for my brother” to “Someone just left it on my keyboard.” Our friend then phoned home to his mom and have her read the MAC address to his PSP off of his PS3, for he had copied the PSP’s firmware information to the PS3 when he got it. After reading off the numbers, and finding out that they matched, the asshole was busted, got all his free stuff that he got from Quakecon taken away, and was banned for life. Like I wrote earlier, my girlfriend did all the detective work and, yes, I am the luckiest boyfriend alive.”
Also from quakecon forums:
“Just to clarify a bit (Quakecon security deserves some props in their efforts too… don’t want anyone going away thinking that Quakecon doesn’t take care of their guests).
After the PSP was reported stolen, help desk staff (mainly DKP and Mitchevious) were watching the DC++ channel and noticed that someone was trying to sell one. DKP then entered negotiations to buy it (so that we could look at serial numbers, MAC, etc). When we figured out that the device was going to be sold soon we started looking into actually procuring the device just to make sure it wasn’t lost for good (I had enough cash on me, just needed to make sure that someone could reimberse me). While we searched for the owner, a friend of mine (Dages) walked up and we talked for a second and it turned out he had seen PSP kid trying to sell it earlier so we could now get a visual identification to go with the name. Dages and I found him and he was carrying the PSP around trying to sell it. I asked Dages to follow him while I went to find my manager (Wiper). I ended up running into Executioner just as Dages called my cell to let me know a sale was going down (this is where Day_Dreamer’s very smart work came in). Executioner and I decided to scope out the sale and detain the seller pending the arrival of the owner (who was already there checking the devices MAC address). Executioner and I took the PSP into Quakecon custody and then Day_Dreamer found the sheriffs.”

I saw him getting told off by the head of the Quakecon. Here are some choice quotes.
“Are you ASHAMED? Good. Because you should be.”
“I know you came here for the LOVE of the GAME. And now you FUCKED IT UP for all of us.”
“You could have become a volunteer! All the schwag you could have gotten is worth a lot more than a fuckin’ PSP!”
And yes, he will be coming back next year.
“If you come back next year, I want you to e-mail me PERSONALLY and tell me what you have leanrned.”

thanks for the compliments on my detective work!
I wish my friend, ryan, would have pressed charges, but unfortunetly, he’s a more forgiving person than I am.
